LIKE-NEW SWEATER
If there is one thing that you have to be careful about to keep a sweater over time, it is washing it. To avoid finding it discolored, shrunk, pilled or with holes, we give you our advice here.
WASH YOUR SWEATER CAREFULLY
The washing has to be done by hand. In both cases, use a special liquid wool detergent but do not add fabric softener which is often too abrasive for the wool.
The watchword: caution. The garment should be washed gently and without pulling on the mesh so as not to deform it. Do not let your sweater soak for more than a few minutes to avoid felting. Wash the sweater inside out to protect the fibers and to prevent rubbing with other linens, which can lead to pilling. Preferably wash your sweater in a washing bag (or pillowcase) if you put it in the machine.
FOR IRONING
Ironing is not necessary if washing and drying have been carried out correctly. If you nevertheless iron your sweater, take all the necessary precautions:
- Very gentle ironing on the reverse
- Do not press or crush the mesh
- Use a pattemouille
Some pilling is natural and inevitable on your sweater. This corresponds to an excess of material. If there are many, you can bring a cashmere comb: lay your sweater flat, gently stretch the material and comb your sweater from top to bottom.
AVOIDING HOLES
Merino, wool and cashmere sweaters are popular with moths. We give you some tips to avoid unpleasant surprises.
Remember to ventilate your cupboards as much as possible and to vacuum your clothes drawers from time to time. Moths are also attracted to darkness and the smell of sweat. So avoid putting sweaters that you have only worn once with your own clothes.
You can use natural repellents like a lavender bag or cedarwood to keep moths away from your favorite sweaters. We do not recommend the use of mothballs and insecticide platelets which are suspected of being carcinogenic.
